As much as I love knitting lace and colour-work, it’s often the simple, wearable basics I come back to time and time again. There are two newcomers in our pattern collection that definitely fall into that category!
Hoxton Basic and Hoxton Luxe are modern variations on the ever-popular beanie hat, in ultra-soft Marshmallow Cloud Baby Alpaca Chunky yarn.
Hoxton Basic is a free pattern and a one-skein, beginner project. Its cousin, Hoxton Luxe, is an upgraded and refined version in a colour-block design with a cosy, folded brim. Hoxton Luxe has a range of child and adult sizes and is available as a PDF pattern.
Both are quick, instant gratification knits and smart, stylish garments – ideal for snow bunnies and urban explorers alike.
Not sure which to choose? Here’s a side-by-side comparison:

Top it off with a giant pompom (because who doesn’t love a pompom?), we used a Clover XL Pompom Maker for the adult sizes, which definitely beats fiddly cardboard circles.
The yarn
Marshmallow Cloud Baby Alpaca Chunky yarn is a very special yarn. It is spun from the fleece of the alpaca’s first sheering, making it the finest available. The fleece is farmed in Peru, where it is also sorted and graded by highly skilled workers. The Mill works to encourage ethical farming practices and to support the Alpaca farmers and local communities, including providing education programmes for children.
In readiness for the arrival of Hoxton hats, we’ve created new colourways of Marshmallow Cloud, and dyed-up new batches of our most popular shades which had sold out.
But, I know that not everyone will be able to get their hands on Marshmallow Cloud, so here are a few alternatives:
I can’t wait to see your projects!
