We’re bringing back this shade we created for Operation: Social Justice in 2020 because trans people need us to step up more than ever. 20% of the sale price of this shade is being donated to Mermaids UK so they can continue their mission to support trans youth.

Shade: The Grey Area – mid grey/mauve mottled with neon pink and blue. Part of a collection inspired by the colours of the transgender flag.

This shade represents the grey area of gender occupied by people who identify as non-binary, agender/gender neutral or gender fluid. Non-binary people may identify with traits associated with both masculine and feminine genders, or neither. Non-binary people face exclusion and erasure of their gender, and are fighting for legal recognition of their identity in many countries (including the UK). But, there are simple ways of supporting non-binary people, for example by replacing gendered language like “ladies and gentlemen” with inclusive terms like “everyone”. This Stonewall article suggests more ways you can be an ally.

Chunkette is a super-chunky with the finesse of a fluffy cloud. It's noticeably softer than our Phlump yarn but also more resilient - you could say it's a bit of a unicorn!

The secret is an unusual chain (or "chainette") structure, which provides strength alongside airiness and warmth.

This yarn is perfect for cosy accessories and extra-warm garments, especially for those who want something super soft and luxurious against their skin. It gives a zingy, vibrant quality to our hand-dyed colours. Chunkette has a round profile that gives beautiful definition to simple stitches. We also love it for jumbo cables and brioche. Extra fine merino has more drape than most types of wool fleece, and you will notice that stitches relax a little after blocking (don't skip that swatch!) but keep their shape well with wear.

Garments will look better for longer if hand-washed with minimum agitation, then spun in the machine to remove excess water. We recommend that woollens are dried flat, which is especially important for super-chunky projects as they can easily distort with the weight of absorbed water.

Caring for neons

Neon dyes are not as colour-fast as regular dyes. To keep them looking their brightest and best we recommend hand washing in cold water (even if the yarn itself is machine washable). Dry away from direct sunlight.
