We’re very excited about this new-to-us, sourced directly from the farmer in upland mid Wales. The fleece comes from a single flock of high-welfare, no slaughter, Shetland sheep. The sheep are hand-sheared, and all of the processing and spinning is also done in Wales, minimising the carbon-footprint of the yarn.

The bare yarn is a natural heathered oatmeal colour, which brings a tweedy, rustic appearance and warmth to our hand-dyed shades.

Shetland fleece has a fine but uniquely crimped wool, creating a plump, lofty yarn that gives both a generous yardage and a wonderful lightness and cosiness to knitted fabric. This yarn’s airy structure works at a variety of gauges and is ideal for traditional Fair Isle techniques, cables and simple stitches.

The price of this yarn reflects the costs of small-batch spinning, as well as fact that the sheep that produce it are not slaughtered for meat, and so the costs of rearing must be covered by the yarn alone.
