February is for finishing

UFOs

Well that’s the theory.

The first of my new year’s knit resolutions – stop buying yarn – is going very well! I have in fact managed not to buy any yarn at all in 2009. It has not been easy, I have frequently been torturing myself window shopping online (damn those Colinette specials, and discontinued Rowan 4 Ply Soft that will soon be gone forever). But, so far I have resisted and I’m even enjoying the challenge of using up the really very nice stash I have got.

In January I finished six projects and knitted over 1km of yarn, which I think is good going. On top of that I managed to sell 1500m of 4 ply which I was never likely to knit.

However, my second resolution – finish what’s started – has not been as successful. I may have finished six projects in January, but I also started six, then started yet another a few days ago (Kim Hargreaves Aimee poncho in bright red mohair). What’s worse, I am itching to start more; this Patons cabled hoodie in mid grey Cash Iroha – yum, Veronik Avery‘s Miliary Jacket from Knitting Classic Style, oh, and her Graphic Hoodie also, Ysolda Teague’s Vivian, and many many things by Kim Hargreaves.

Would this many sweaters even fit in my wardrobe? Unlikely. Perhaps the cold weather is giving me sweater cravings.

Meanwhile, my poor unfinished objects (seven currently) have sat more or less untouched. The UFOs include a t shirt intended for my sister’s birthday LAST February, a throw that was supposed to be a wedding present for friends that got married two months ago, and an aran jumper that my aunt has mostly knitted for me.

My aim for the rest of February is to actually finish at least one of these long term UFOs, and to not under any circumstances start anything new.

Luckily February is a short month, then we’re on to Malabrigo March. But what about resolution 1? No Malabrigo for me :-(

I resolved to finish UFO’s this month and only finished 2: a zippered cardigan I wanted to block better (it worked, no more rippling zipper!) and a Christmas 2008 afghan. The rest: a mohair wrap cardi from 2007, a passementerie cotton cardi from 2002, an ostrich plume lace shawl from 2003, a tufted burgundy cardigan from 2005, a red mohair afghan from 2007… oh bwahahaha and evil laughter. I face those projects and find myself ITCHing to start a antique rose cotton lace wrap sweater for my ballet friend and a yellow-n-white lace dress for my other ballet friend. Not to mention that I started my first circular shrug this month and a very simple ribbed pullover for myself and then an ages old final using up of all my reel-to-reel tape from old experiments with sound recordings…. I feel that I too am suffering from a knitting frenzy….
